  • Níor chóir an Ghaeilge a bheith ina hábhar aighnis – Pat Hume

Níor chóir an Ghaeilge a bheith ina hábhar aighnis – Pat Hume

Níor cheart don Ghaeilge a bheith ina hábhar aighnis ó thaobh na polaitíochta, a deir Pat Hume, bean iarcheannaire an SDLP, John Hume.

Dúirt Pat Hume, a bhfuil néaltrú ar a fear céile, nár chóir go mbeadh teanga mar údar “gan a bheith ag caint”.

“Caithfear a deireadh a chur le tráth na ceartaiseachta agus na fimíneachta.

“Baineann an  pholaitíocht leis an gcomhréiteach, le ceird an ruda is féidir a bhaint amach. Caithfidh siad a bheith níos cruthaithí agus an pictiúr mór a thuiscint.

“Ná ligtear do theanga, modh cumarsáide, a bheith mar údar gan a bheith ag caint,” arsa Pat Hume agus í faoi agallamh ar BBC Radio Foyle.

Dúirt sí gur “fear mór cainte ab ea John Hume riamh agus bheadh sé croíbhriste dá mbeadh ar a chumas an méad atá ag tarlú faoi láthair a thuiscint”.

“Is cuimhin liom i 1993 nuair a tháinig an scéal chun solais go raibh sé i mbun cainteanna le Gerry Adams agus bhíothas ag caitheamh anuas air ó cheann ceann na bliana.

“Ach bhí an fhís agus an misneach aige leanúint leis na cainteanna sin in ainneoin an tarcaisnithe.”

Inniu atá tús á chur leis an mbabhta cainteanna is déanaí maidir le hathbhunú fheidhmeannas Stormont, atá ar scor ó mhí Eanáir 2017.

Tá an t-éileamh ar acht Gaeilge i measc na gceisteanna is mó atá ag cothú aighnis idir Sinn Féin agus an DUP agus bhí ceist an achta ar na húdair scoilte is mó sna cainteanna ar theip orthu roimhe seo.

Dúirt Pat Hume go raibh cúrsaí sláinte agus oideachais ag dul in olcas fad is a bhí an tsáinn pholaitiúil gan réiteach.

“Ní bheidh sé furasta ag ár bpolaiteoirí teacht ar an gcomhréiteach atá riachtanach, ach tá súil agam go dtarlóidh sé.”

Dúirt sí chomh maith gur fhág an “folús” polaitiúil go raibh an baol ann go spreagfaí easaontóirí chun gnímh agus gan uathu ach “leithscéal” chun “filleadh ar ár sráideanna”.
