‘Ar son na hÉireann a chaith sé a shaol’ – Seamus Mallon ar shlí na fírinne

| Tuairisc.ie | ,

Tá Seamus Mallon, duine d’fhathaigh shaol na polaitíochta in Éirinn tar éis bháis.

Bhí Mallon, iar-LeasChéad-Aire Thuaisceart Éireann agus iar-leascheannaire an SDLP, 83 bliain d’aois.

Thosaigh Mallon, arb as Cnoc an Mhargaidh in Ard Mhacha dó, ag plé leis an SDLP ag deireadh na seascaidí agus bhí sé lárnach i ngluaiseacht na gceart sibhialta.

Bhí ról tábhachtach aige chomh maith sa phróiseas síochána arbh é Comhaontú Aoine an Chéasta an toradh a bhí air.

Bhí sé ina LeasChéad-Aire ar fheidhmeannas Stormont idir 1998-2001 nuair a bhí David Trimble ina Chéad-Aire. Bhí sé ina leascheannaire ar an SDLP idir 1979-2001.

Dúirt ceannaire an SDLP Colum Eastwood go raibh duine de na daoine is mó a chosain “an ceart, an comhionannas agus an tsíocháin” in Éirinn ar lár.

“Ar son na hÉireann agus mhuintir na hÉireann a chaith Seamus a shaol agus d’oibrigh sé ar son chuile dhuine amháin againn – is fearrde muid dá bharr,” arsa  Colum Eastwood.

Dúirt Eastwood gur duine as an ngnáth ab ea Mallon.

“Le linn na laethanta is dorcha sa choimhlint, nuair ba bheag dóchas a bhí ann, ba é Seamus a chothaigh tart na córa, a bhí go láidir sa SDLP agus sna pobail ar chaill oiread sin de dheasca an fhoiréigin pholaitiúil,” a dúirt ceannaire an SDLP.
