An Scéal Iontais in Éirinn

An Scéal Iontais in Éirinn

    An Scéal Iontais in Éirinn

Lecture / Talk Arts and Entertainment

Join Dr. Ailbhe Nic Giolla Chomhaill for a unique presentation on ‘tales of wonder’ from the oral Irish tradition. Entirely in Irish, this workshop is most suitable for upper intermediate and advanced learners.

Seánra é an scéal iontais atá seanbhunaithe i dtraidisiún béil na hÉireann, agus a raibh an-mheas ag scéalaithe na tíre seo air le fada an lá. Tá na scéalta seo fréamhaithe go dlúth san fhantaisíocht, agus díríonn a bplota go minic ar aistear a thugann an laoch ón ghnáthshaol go dtí an domhan osnádúrtha, áit a gcastar cuiditheoirí draíochtacha agus námhaid scáfara air. Bíonn dúshlán ollmhór le cur i gcrích ag an laoch sa limistéar osréalaíoch seo sular féidir leis nó léi filleadh ar an bhaile, bean óg álainn a phósadh, agus saol sócúlach a bheith aige ón am sin amach. Pléifear cúlra an chineál scéil seo sa cheardlann, agus díreofar ar chúpla sampla den scéal iontais i dtraidisiún béil na Gaeltachta.

Wonder tales are well-established in the oral tradition of Ireland, and have been highly regarded by Irish storytellers for a long time. These stories are rooted in fantasy, and often focus on a journey that takes the hero from ordinary life to the supernatural world, where they encounter magical helpers and frightful enemies. The hero has a huge challenge to complete in this surreal area before they can return home, marry a beautiful young woman, and live a luxurious life from then on. The background to this type of story will be discussed in the workshop, and we will focus on a few examples of the wonder story in the oral tradition of the Gaeltacht.

Is léachtóir le Gaeilge í Ailbhe i Scoil na Gaeilge, an Bhéarla, agus na Cumarsáide in Ollscoil Luimnigh. D’fhoilsigh Leabhar Breac a leabhar An Chaora Ghlas agus Scéalta Eile as Seanadh Farracháin, sa bhliain 2016.
