Sam Henry – Amhráin na nDaoine

| Dáithí Anraí | ,

“Let it be our joyful task to search out, conserve, and make known the treasures of the Songs of the People” – Sam Henry

Ag tús an 20ú haois, i gCúl Raithin, bhí fear darbh ainm Sam Henry ag obair don rialtas, ag taisteal ar fud an tuaiscirt ag cinntiú go raibh daoine i dteideal pinsean seanaoise.

Bhí spéis mhór aige sa cheol agus chaith sé an t-am sin ag seinm leis na daoine ar bhuail sé leo ar an bhóthar. Thosaigh sé ag bailiú na sean-amhrán traidisiúnta a chuala sé agus é i mbun taisteala. Cúpla bliain ina dhiaidh sin, thosaigh sé ag obair le nuachtán mar eagarthóir ceoil agus bhí sé abálta na hamhráin seo a chur ar fáil don phobal.

Fuair Sam bás sa bhliain 1952 ach in 1990 bhí na hamhráin uilig bailithe arís ag an chomhlacht foilsitheora, University of Georgia Press i Stáit Aontaithe Mheiriceá, sa leabhar, ‘Sam Henry’s Songs of the People’.

I mí Mheán Fómhair 2018, d’eagraigh an BBC agus TG4 ceolchoirm sa tSeaneaglais i nDoire, le cuidiú ón ILBF agus an USBF.

Bhí ceoltóirí agus amhránaí iontacha ag déanamh a leagan féin de na hamhráin a bhailigh. Oíche den scoth a bhí ann ina ndearnadh ceiliúradh ar fhear a rinne a dhícheall sean-amhráin tíre a chaomhnú.

Bhí Meon Eile i lathair le blaisín den chraic a thaispeáint daoibh. Leis an chlár iomlán a fheiceál, amharc ar BBC 2 Dé Domhnaigh ag 10in.
