Is fearr atá ag éirí le daltaí i scoileanna lán-Ghaeilge DEIS ná ina macasamhail Béarla –tuarascáil nua

Is fearr atá ag éirí le daltaí i nGaelscoileanna a bhfuil stádas Deis acu ná mar a éiríonn le daltaí i mbunscoileanna Deis go náisiúnta, de réir taighde nua a foilsíodh le déanaí.

An Institiúid Oideachais, Ollscoil Chathair Bhaile Átha Cliath agus an Foras Taighde ar Oideachas a thug faoin taighde seo a rinne measúnú ar scileanna léitheoireachta agus matamaitice dhaltaí Rang a trí agus Rang a sé i nGaelscoileanna a bhfuil stádas Deis acu.

Iniúchadh ar an Tumoideachas do Dhaltaí i Scoileanna Lán-Ghaeilge i gCeantair faoi Mhíbhuntáiste is teideal don tuarascáil nua.

Tráth a ndearnadh an taighde, a bhí á mhaoiniú ag An Chomhairle um Oideachas Gaeltachta & Gaelscolaíochta, COGG, bhí stádas Deis ag 13 Gaelscoil ar fad sa tír. Bhí stádas Deis Banda a hAon ag sé cinn de na Gaelscoileanna sin, na scoileanna is mó faoi mhíbhuntáiste. Bhí stádas Deis Banda a Dó ag na seacht nGaelscoil eile, mar a raibh an míbhuntáiste níos lú.

Cé go n-aithnítear sa tuarascáil go bhfuil teacht ag níos mó páistí “ó chúlraí socheacnamaíocha ísle ar an tumoideachas in Éirinn”  deirtear go bhféadfadh rogha an oideachais lánGhaeilge a bheith “níos leithne fós”.

Deirtear sa taighde gur ceapadh “go traidisiúnta” gur ar dhaoine mheánaicmeacha is mó a bhíodh na scoileanna lán-Gaeilge ag freastal agus gur “ualach breise” a bheadh ann do dhaltaí nach raibh a muintir go maith as “freastal ar an gcóras tumoideachais”.

Ag labhairt di le Tuairisc.ie, dúirt an Dr. Karen Ní Chlochasaigh, duine den triúr a bhí i mbun an taighde, go rabhadar ag iarraidh “léargas” a thabhairt ar conas mar atá ag éirí le daltaí i scoileanna Deis a bhfuil an tumoideachas á chur chun cinn iontu.

“Is é an tuairim a bhíodh ann is dócha ná cén fáth go gcuirfeá páistí a bhfuil go leor deacrachtaí acu chuig scoil lán-Ghaeilge, agus gach rud á fhoghlaim trí mheán na Gaeilge. I scoileanna i gceantracha faoi mhíbhuntáiste is minic a bhíonn deacrachtaí ag na páistí leis an gcumas Béarla atá acu, mar sin cén fáth go mbeifeá ag cruthú níos mó deacrachtaí do na páistí sin?”

Údar dóchais di a bhí sna torthaí, a deir sí, go háirithe na torthaí a bhain “léamh an Bhéarla” mar gur  léir go bhfuil ag éirí níos fearr leis na daltaí i scoileanna lán-Ghaeilge a bhfuil stádas Deis acu ná daltaí ar comhaois leo atá ag freastal ar scoileanna Béarla Deis, a dúirt an Dr Ní Chlochasaigh.

Ó thaobh léamh an Bhéarla de, léirigh na torthaí nár éirigh chomh maith céanna le daltaí Rang a trí sna scoileanna lán-Ghaeilge i gcomparáid le daltaí ar chomhaois leo i scoileanna Béarla Deis. Ach faoi Rang a sé, bhí torthaí níos fearr ag na daltaí i sna scoileanna lán-Ghaeilge Deis.

Dúirt an Dr Ní Chlochasaigh go raibh na daltaí i rang a trí “beagán chun deiridh” agus iad “ag iarraidh dul i ngleic leis an dá theanga” ach leis an tumoideachas go sáraíonn siad an dúshlán sin agus go mbíonn “chun tosaigh” ar na daltaí sna scoileanna Béarla faoi rang a sé.

Deirtear sa tuarascáil gur gá “aird a thabhairt” go práinneach ar an “líon ard daltaí laga” ó thaobh léamh an Bhearla i rang a trí sna Scoileanna Deis Lán-Ghaeilge Banda 1.

Ó thaobh na Matamaitice, bhí daltaí i scoileanna lán-Ghaeilge Deis Banda a hAon go mór taobh thiar den sampla náisiúnta i Rang a trí ach faoi rang a sé bhíodar chun tosaigh ar an meán náisiúnta. Dalta i scoileanna Deis Banda 2 bhíodar faoi bhun an mheáin náisiúnta sa dá ábhar.

Dar le Ní Chlochasaigh go léiríonn an taighde “gur féidir dul i ngleic le foghlaim ábhar trí mheán an dara teanga” ach tuilleadh tacaíochta a chur ar fáil le freastal ar na scoileanna seo.

“Is léir ón taighde go bhfuil ag éirí leis an gcóras tumoideachais in ainneoin go bhfuil go leor dúshlán le sárú ag scoileanna lán-Ghaeilge i gceantracha faoi mhíbhuntáiste,” a dúirt sí

Tugtar le fios sa tuarascáil nua gur trí Bhéarla a bhí measúnuithe síceolaíocha i Scoileanna Lán-Gaeilge DEIS á ndéanamh de ghnáth agus go raibh formhór na bpríomhoidí “ar aon ghuth” go raibh “bearnaí sa chur chuige” sin.

Rud eile a chuir as go mór do mhúinteoirí nach raibh an chomhairle sna tuairiscí ón tSeirbhís Náisiúnta Síceolaíochta Oideachais oiriúnach do “chomhthéacs an ranga dátheangaigh”. Deirtear gur chuir tuairisc NEPS a dúirt go raibh “ísealchumas ag daltaí sa teanga labhartha – Gaeilge isteach go mór ar 31.6% de na múinteoirí.

Ní mór “riachtanais iomlána” an pháiste a chur san áireamh sna measúnachtaí ar bhonn “níos feasaí” agus “níos cúramaí”, a deirtear sa tuarascáil nuafhoilsithe.
