’23 bás sa tseachtain’ mura gcuirtear cosc ar bhreoslaí salacha i dtithe cónaithe – Foras Croí na hÉireann

D’fhéadfadh suas le “23 duine sa tseachtain” bás a fháil de dheasca an truaillithe aeir as seo go ceann naoi mbliana, dar le Foras Croí na hÉireann. Maíodh i gcomhráiteas a d’eisigh an Foras Croí agus Foras Croí na Breataine Thuaisceart Éireann (BHF NI) inniu go bhféadfadh sé go mbeadh 12,000 duine marbh de dheasca an truaillithe faoin mbliain 2030 mura gcuirfí cosc ar úsáid breoslaí salacha ar fud na hÉireann.

“Níl aon mheas ag an truailliú aeir ar theorainneacha agus tá an-dochar á dhéanamh ag dó an bhreosla sholadaigh i dtithe cónaithe ar shláinte na ndaoine thuaidh agus theas. Mura dtéitear i ngleic leis seo sa dá dhlínse, básóidh na mílte eile.

“Ar an drochuair, is iad na daoine is leochailí – páistí, seandaoine agus daoine a bhfuil galair thromchúiseacha orthu – is mó a bheidh thíos leis,” a dúirt an Dochtúir Tim Collins, príomhfheidhmeannach an Fhorais Croí.

Tá an dá eagraíocht ag iarraidh go n-oibreoidh an dá rialtas as lámha a chéile le haghaidh a thabhairt ar an bhfad agus cosc a chur ar na breoslaí is measa truailliú ar fud na tíre. Tá a leithéid á bheartú i dTithe an Oireachtais cheana féin agus tá próiseas comhairliúcháin ar bun in Stormont.

Léiríodh i suirbhé a rinne MRBI le deireanas go bhfuil imní ar 61% den phobal ó dheas faoi na fadhbanna sláinte a eascraíonn as an truailliú aeir.

Dúirt an Dochtúir Collins go gcaithfear a bheith ag obair “i gcomhar a chéile sa dá dhlínse” ar an gceist seo agus cosc a chur ar bhreoslaí salacha i dtithe cónaithe le “beatha daoine a shábháil”.

Léiríodh i staidéar a rinne BHF NI go bhfanann na truailleáin i bhfuil an duine ar feadh trí mhí agus go bhféadfadh meall mór truailleán teacht le chéile sna cuislí agus féithí, rud a d’fhéadfadh stróc a tharraingt ar dhuine nó a d’fhéadfadh cur isteach ar oibriú an chroí ar bhealaí eile.
